For generations, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have sought to follow the Savior’s command to “love thy neighbour” (Matthew 22:39) by caring for people in need. The Bishops’ Central Storehouse plays a key role in that effort.
To meet immediate needs, the Church operates five bishops’ central storehouses that supply hundreds of bishops’ storehouses on a local level. The smaller storehouses then provide assistance to individuals and families through referrals from a local Church leader, called a bishop. All food and supplies are provided free of charge and are made possible through generous donations of Church members. Members traditionally fast each month for two meals, then donate the value of these meals to the cause of people in need.
The Bishops’ Central Storehouse in Salt Lake City is the largest of the five central storehouses. It stores 143 fresh and canned food items along with hygiene products, cleaning supplies, and diapers. The facility supports large-scale distribution with a fleet of semitrucks and 44 loading docks. When needed, it serves as a hub for sending emergency supplies to areas affected by natural disasters. While this storehouse is not open to public tours, it stands as an essential part of the Church’s ongoing work to lift and support people in need.
